What is Molasses?
This delicious sweetener has been a staple in Grandma's medicine cabinet for generations, and for good reason. Nutritionists often consider blackstrap molasses a superfood, due to it's impressive nutritional panel! After sugarcane is harvested and its juice is extracted, the juice undergoes several boilings to create a concentrate and allow sugar crystals to form. Once the sugar crystals are removed (for cane sugar), the dark thick syrup that remains is called molasses. The dark, rich color is a reflection of molasses' dense nutrient content, boasting beneficial vitamins and minerals.
What does 'blackstrap' mean?
There are three different types of molasses, based on the number of times the cane juice has been boiled:
Light Molasses is a result of the first round of boiling and sugar crystal extraction. It is the sweetest and lightest in color, with the lowest in micronutrient content (estimated 25% of the nutritional content of blackstrap). Light molasses is what is commonly found in commercial feeds.
Dark Molasses is the result of the second boiling.
Blackstrap Molasses is the result of the third boiling. It is the most nutritious form of molasses with the richest nutritional content and lowest sugar content (low glycemic). As the refined sugar is extracted out of the Blackstrap Molasses, the nutrients are left concentrated in the remaining syrup, resulting in a delicious, nutrient-dense superfood!
Ease of use...
Our blackstrap molasses powder supports ease of use, especially for those who board their horses & pre-set up their horses' supplements. However, little moisture will turn this powder back into a sticky syrup, so do take caution with storage. This is in our favor when poured into the horses feed bucket, as the moisture from their breath often melts the powder back into delicious syrup, as well.
