What is Chamomile?

Chamomile is an annual plant and part of the Asteraceae family, naturalized in North America but originally found in Europe. It has fine, green, fern-like leaves and beautiful, little, daisy-like flowers. This wildflower is hardy and can grow in many conditions and situations, including along roadsides and in stony ground.

Historical Use of Chamomile

Chamomile is one of the oldest, most well documented, and widely used herbs known to mankind. Trusted for thousands of years as a powerful health-aid, images of chamomile flowers are found in many ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics. Chamomile is also an illustrated entry in the 11th century part of the Old English Illustrated Herbal, as well as, Nicholas Culpeper’s 17th century, The Complete Herbal, and has a strong presence in ancient herbalism. The word chamomile translates from the Greek word χαμαίμηλον (chamaimēlon) meaning "earth-apple".

Many Benefits of Chamomile

Containing many terpenoids and flavonoids, this soothing herb has numerous medicinal properties packed into its tiny blossoms. Chamomile is supportive of digestion, can positively impact the GI mucosa and minimize ulcers and colic, reduces muscle spasms (antispasmodic), cleanses the blood, soothes nerves and supports restful sleep (it’s a nervine, relaxant and can help lower cortisol), supports menstrual disorders and PMS, is nourishing (contains many vitamins and minerals), can help manage aches and pain (analgesic), supports a normal inflammatory response (supportive of arthritis and laminitis), helps reduce fevers, supports infants with teething pain and stomachaches, and so much more.

Horses Love Chamomile

Predominantly offered to horses as a soothing digestive aid and to promote relaxation / minimize anxiety, chamomile can help to reduce cortisol levels, being supportive of horses with an elevated ACTH (Cushing’s disease). It’s beneficial for arthritis, laminitis, and many other inflammatory conditions, and is a nourishing addition to the diet. Chamomile flowers smell delicious, similar to tart apples, and most horses are delighted to find them mixed into their feed!

Chamomile can also be helpful for horses suffering the loss of a herd mate, providing them comfort by nourishing their nervous system during a time of distress and loneliness.
